My Philosophy of Education
My goal is to establish a teaching philosophy in my classroom where students understand that they have an important role to play in society, and becoming active members of their community is the first step to becoming well informed citizens.
Community is the foundation of my classroom, designed so students can feel safe to explore ideas and make mistakes without feeling shame or embarrassment from peers. Lessons should incorporate as much hands on experience and creation as possible, moving beyond the text and contextualizing the information in ways that students can grasp and manipulate, synthesizing information.
I plan to work towards simplifying the way I collect data, with the end goal of having students understand why their grade is what it is, and what steps they can take to improve it. I want to encourage students to take ownership over outcomes by carefully creating a space for them to be outside their comfort zone and still capable of success, gradually increasing their ability and self confidence with each win.
I believe learning is a lifelong activity, and each problem we encounter can be seen as an opportunity to learn. Students will be encouraged to employ a growth mindset, and by carefully applying progressive overload by increasing the complexity and challenging nature of material, students can earn the satisfaction of success without feeling underestimated or overworked.
In reading your Philosophy of Education I really have to agree with you on how we are helping students become members of society. They need as much hands-on experience in the classroom as they can. When the classroom is a safe place for learning much growth can happen. Thank you.
ReplyDelete(I have to laugh at the meme you attached to your blog. I'm not a fan of Bart, however, I like this meme.)
The fact that the community is the foundation of your classroom says a lot about your character and if you take that with you during your teaching career you will definitely be an awesome educator. I agree with each day we encounter is an opportunity to learn and that we learn something every day. Great post!!
